Should We Fear AI?

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the way we work, the kinds of jobs we do, and the ways we understand our careers and callings. For Christians, these changes raise important questions not only about technology but also about the meaning and purpose of human work.

Highrock’s Theology Lab and the Theology of Work Project are partnering to offer three in-person panel based conversations exploring work, faith, and artificial intelligence. The gatherings will bring together Christians from across the Boston area to consider how to faithfully navigate uncertainties, opportunities and challenges related to AI. Each event will feature a moderated conversation with one or more panelists, followed by an opportunity for audience questions and discussion.

This October, the first of the series, will begin with one of the most immediate questions facing working people:

Should we be afraid of artificial intelligence?

AI is already changing workplaces and industries. Some workers are concerned that their jobs may disappear, while others are watching their responsibilities change as AI takes over tasks that were previously performed by people. At the same time, AI may create new opportunities and allow people to approach their work in ways that were previously impossible.

With featured guest, Albert Chen (CEO of Anago AI), this conversation will explore what is actually at stake when AI changes the nature of work. If AI can perform certain tasks faster and more efficiently than people, what remains uniquely human about work? Does human work have value apart from its economic productivity? How should Christians begin to think about these questions?
