Theology Lab: Deliver Us From Evil

Theology Lab is an exciting, year-long (2025-2026) online discussion series on the themes of evil, suffering, and faith. It’s free and open to all (individuals, communities, church group). You can register for the sessions that interest you here.

Evil and Suffering?

The problem of suffering and evil is pervasive. From the realities of ongoing war, climate challenges and racial strife to the breaking of trust between friends, we’re reminded things are not as they should be. For Christians, it is essential to name and confront evil in this world.

This year’s Theology Lab brings together a group of respected thinkers – including Tim Mackie, Nicolas Kristof, Willie Jennings, Kaitlyn Scheiss, Russell Moore, Shane Claiborne, Miroslav Volf, and others – to explore key questions like: What does the Bible say about evil and suffering? What happens when our understanding of evil differs from someone else’s? and What does true forgiveness require?

While we won’t solve the mystery of evil, these conversations can inspire us towards fresh and faithful Christ-like responses to the problems of evil and suffering in our world.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Through a form of learning that values humility and curiosity, we strive to become informed followers of Jesus, to encourage solidarity amongst one another and with the marginalized, and to reflect together on next-steps for discipleship.

  • While each session differs, we usually begin by hearing from one or two invited guests in a casual interview. This is followed up with a Question-and-Answer session between the speaker and group participants (you can submit questions and keep a conversation going in the chat). During the last part of the session we use Zoom breakout groups to discuss reflections on that session’s topic. These groups are smaller, around 4-6 people, and discussion questions are provided. There is not a designated facilitator, so please refer to the discussion questions as helpful.

  • No! Theology Lab discussions are free, sponsored by Highrock Online. You are invited to make a voluntary contribution to help offset speaker fees and operating costs, but this is entirely optional.
