Our 2012 ArtSpeak theme, Vices and Virtues: Life Stories, follows Highrock’s study of the Seven Deadly Sins during the season of Lent. Historically, the Seven Deadly Sins (capital vices) have been explored widely in art and literature from Dante’s Divine Comedy to iconic works by the likes of Bosch and Bruegel.  In contemporary artistic practice, from art to film, poetry to dance, explorations into our human vices has not been lost--still transcending divisions between the sacred and profane. Tackling the theme of Vices and Virtues as a church seems as exciting and relevant as ever.

ArtSpeak 2012: “Vices and Virtues: Life Stories” will take place on March 31, 2012 and will include a visual art gallery and and a performance night.

In prior years, we encouraged all Highrockers to create art based on a broad theme. This theme was left wide open to encourage responses from a wide range of approaches. The strength of the show was its diversity and the messages were far-ranging.

This year we are trying something new!  Our goal for ArtSpeak this year is to tell a more precise and clear story. Specifically, we are asking you to explore the idea of Vices and Virtues through a deeply autobiographical lens. While we still value artwork from a variety of perspectives, media, and artists, our hope is that the performances and gallery will be held tightly together by approaches to the theme that reflect personal experiences, challenges, triumphs, or perceptions. We want you to communicate something about vices and virtues through the idea of a life story.

Also, in our hope to make ArtSpeak a more collaborative experience, we are encouraging all artists to participate in one of two group discussions. These discussions will provide opportunities to connect with other artists around the theme and to share your works in progress. They will be fun and exploratory and will be filmed and archived as we document this show.

What is ArtSpeak?

ArtSpeak is an opportunity for Highrockers and members of our wider communities to respond to and engage with a theme through creative expression. By welcoming artistic work in a variety of media and from a diversity of perspectives, ArtSpeak becomes a meeting space to generate discussion and foster dialogue. ArtSpeak, as an extension of Highrock’s Arts ministry, is guided by the vision that the arts—commissioned and explored in the context of community-- can invigorate communication, restoration, and reconciliation. ArtSpeak aspires to recognize our human experiences while revealing and glorifying God.
